Camping Tables Pros and Cons

Do We Really need a camping table?

To be absolutely truthful, no you don’t. Having said that, camping tables are mighty useful. At the very least, it’s a place to put stuff and keep it off the ground. The camping table becomes the “heart” of the camp, if you will. Of course, after dinner, the campfire takes over. But when our stomachs start grumbling that’s where we gather.
If you know anything about us, you know that we like to prepare as much food at home as we possibly can, ( see our camping tips and tricks article ) but we still need to serve up the food somewhere, and put down our beverage.
As a result, given our ‘druthers, we ‘druther have a camping table than not. We’ve always appreciated the convenience of a camping table and missed its absence.
Is it essential? No. But, it’s sure nice to have one. If you think you might be in the market (and you probably should be )There are a few things to consider:
- Ease of use (Setting it up, taking it down)
- Size (Both when set up, and when broken down for storage
- The Cost-Quality Consideration
- Stability and strength
- Legroom
- Weight
Here are the camping tables we liked, and why we liked ’em:
PORTAL Outdoor Folding Portable Picnic Camping Table
Pros | Cons |
|
|
The Portal Camping Table has an adjustable height (from 17.7″ – 27.5″ or 45cm – 69.8cm), which is pretty useful, and gives you the option of sitting or standing around it. It’s quick and easy to set up and the legs can be arranged for uneven ground.
We liked the detachable mesh basket underneath the table surface. It is remarkably handy, and, in reality, expands the available table space. This means that you can stash stuff that would normally take up space on the tabletop itself. ( Cutting boards, cutlery, or the like.)

The table surface can be rolled up into quite a small package. The whole thing in the stuff bag takes up a pretty small package. (7.1” L x 5.1” W x35.4” H OR 18 cm L x 13cm W x 90cm H)
The table top is light-coloured, which can be hard to keep clean, but overall, there is a lot to like with this camping table.
This table is available in different sizes.
It’s sometimes on sale, so be sure to check Amazon for the price.

DULACIMA Roll Up Camping Table
Pros | Cons |
|
|

DULACINA was a new company to us. This camping table ticked a lot of boxes for us. At 36.25″L x 24.75″W x 23.75″H (92.1 L x 62.8cm W x 60.3cm H) it was plenty big enough for our needs.
Although it’s aluminum, the tabletop looks a lot like wood grain, and was easy to clean. (Even Chili night!)
At the lower height there was no problem with stability, however, at the highest extension it appeared a little wobbly. We had a bad experience with a table toppling over, so we’re a little cautious about that. A little caution is always required, though, so that’s not really a big deal.
This camping table can be set up quickly and easily, and breaks down just as quickly. It goes in the stuff bag without any trouble, and at 4.5lb (2.04kg) it was pretty easy to schlepp around. However, we wouldn’t take it hiking!
We liked it overall, and it’s pretty reasonable. Check Amazon for the price.

Sanny Outdoor Folding Portable Picnic Camping Table
Pros | Cons |
|
|

This brand ( WUROMISE), the manufacturer of the Sanny Outdoor Folding Portable Picnic Camping Table, was another company that was new to us. We liked what we saw, though, and we’ll be on the lookout for other products from them. The camping table looks solid and durable, and it was easy to set up and take down. This is always a big deal with us.
We have a “love-hate” relationship with the basket underneath. Let us explain:
It’s totally useful, and greatly expands the tabletop space because you can stash so much stuff in the basket that would otherwise be taking up valuable real estate. On the other hand, the basket is exactly where you’re legs go if you’re sitting around eating or having a cold beverage. So it’s whichever is most important to you. (You can take it down, also.) You’re gonna have to decide which one is more of a pressing issue for you. Additionally, too, there might be a better option for you.
The table top is aluminum, but the legs are steel, so it’s heavier than a lot of other camping tables we liked. (13.2 lbs or 6kgs). If you’re just schlepping it from the car a few steps to the campsite, no worries. But in the spring we’ll be going to some music festivals that will require a 10-minute or so walk, so this gave us some pause. Still, once you get the rascal schlepped and set up, it’s great.
We liked the stain-resistant top and the stability. So there’s a lot to like. For a lot of people, this is probably a great fit. For us, we’d prefer something a little lighter. Still, it ticks a lot of boxes for us.

JOUYEK Folding Table, Outdoor Camping Table
Pros | Cons |
|
|

We liked this one a lot. It’s built to last, with a confidence-inspiring heavy-duty construction.
It was not difficult to set up or tear down, and it fit into its stuff bag pretty neatly. The stuff bag folds down into a reasonably small package. (3.9″ H x 7.9″ W x 35.4″ L OR 9.9cm H x 21cm W x 90cm L)
Nevertheless, it’s not huge, but it does the job. We didn’t put any hot pots or pans directly on the table surface, but the company claims the table top is built for that.
Additionally, this is another camping table that has a basket, but the basket is much smaller than the others we tried. However, this is both good and bad. The legroom issue is not really a thing, but on the other hand there’s less that you can stash in there, which means you have even less surface area on a table that’s already not all that generous. (In retrospect, that seems like not such a big deal, for what you get at this price point.)
Finally, the legs, while telescopic, were not all that easy to change. Still, it was strong and stable and it’s built like a tank.

Coleman Outdoor Compact Folding Table
Pros | Cons |
|
|

Ok, full disclosure: If you’ve read our blog on backpack coolers, ( and if you haven’t, what’s stopping you? Your ass tied to the piano?) you know that we have a thing for the Coleman company. We’ve always found their products to be well-made, and super durable.
We believe this camping table to be no different. It does exactly what it was designed to do. It’s easy to use and sturdy. It’s intended to be “ultra-compact”, and that’s what it is. The tabletop is aluminum and the slats roll up. It has a snap-together design that we liked a lot. Whether or not it fits your particular needs is something you’ll have to decide.
We found it to be a little small, especially compared to some of the other camping tables we reviewed.
We liked it, but if we’re taking a table we would like a bit more elbow room. However, we’ve used smaller, (See the image at the top of this page) and this one definitely does the job.

GCI Outdoor 15426: Folding Camping Table
Pros | Cons |
|
|

This camping table had the largest table surface (30″L x 60″W x 29.5″H(76.2 x 152.4 x 74.9cm) of any table we reviewed. It’s great if you have a great group. For us, it might be overkill, but you never know.
There’s no stuff sack, just a handle which works, but it means that you have to cover it with a blanket or something when you store it. On the other hand, it’s one of the few that folds down almost flat, which, depending on your storage situation (house or car) it may be really good for you. We were kind of indifferent.
It was super easy to set up – just unfold it and flip out the legs. Lock ’em, and you’re good to go. So we liked that, too. We weren’t crazy about the strut (support) in the centre – kept banging our knees – but we suspect you could get used to that.
Pretty good for the price point. Like a lot of things on Amazon, it appears to be on sale from time to time, so be sure to check regularly.

Wildfinder Folding Camping Table
Pros | Cons |

|

We were a little disappointed that this camping table was not truly a foldable camping table. Besides, how hard would it be to make it so? Just a couple of hinges, right? You could halve the size of the stuff bag.
Small quibble at the end of the day. We’ve spent a lot of time in Komenkais (Community centres) here in Japan and you always have to set up tables designed like this. (The community centre ones are much heavier, but just as unstable at the top height. So take this with a grain of salt.)
This is mighty stylish, which is a plus, and the aluminum is pretty light and easy to keep clean. We liked the bag, too. In addition, everything looks pretty durable, including the bag’s handle. (Few things piss us off like a handle that breaks after only a few years, and this camping table bag filled us with confidence.)
The camping table surface itself rolls up, which left us scratching our heads. (See the first paragraph.)
In any event, it did the job, and it’s certainly very useful for some people ( it received 4 stars), but for us Loonies we’d probably choose something else at the end of the day. Just calling balls and strikes.
